[ this.. hurts. It really does. It doesn't matter if Ichimatsu bullies him the most— even if he had the most tension with Ichimatsu than the rest of his family. He's so.. scared— scared he won't be able to be somebody Ichimatsu can ever rely on; scared he'll do something to get him hurt. Ichimatsu hides a lot of emotion, much like Karamatsu does, but in different ways. Showing weakness like this is something neither of them liked to do, so he can imagine how tough it must be.
What would he like to hear if something like this happened? Well.. ]
Oi, Ichimatsu. Sh, for just a second. You're.. [ a pause.. ] strong. [ He'd like to hear this, he thinks, if he was this upset. ]
Just see how well we are doing here. Heh. I thought we were all too uncool for this, you know. We've always been told we would amount to nothing, but here... I think allows us many opportunities. When you look at it that way, I think we have a certain reason to be proud of us.
For starters, we're.. making friends for a change— not just the ones that we've grown up with back home. [ that's a huge deal. ]
[He sniffs roughly and smears his hands over his face when he's hushed, actually doing Karamatsu the solid of listening to him. You're strong, he says, and Ichimatsu releases a quiet, humorless laugh, but lets him keep talking. His voice has always been pretty soothing, anyway, when he's not being dumb.]
[...He was being pretty dumb right now, but that seemed to be his constant state. He shrugs gently and smudges the heels of his hands into his eyes, nodding.]
Yeah, so it is, but at least we aren't making anymore enemies.. or people who just don't like us. For a place like this.. that isn't where we even belong, it is pretty gracious.
Hopefully.. it won't stop— and we will both make even more friends... ah, who even knows, maybe we will meet some lovers here..! [ His voice is quiet— delicate— and understanding. This is one way they both feel the same. ]
I think I dislike me enough for the entire ship, so I've got that covered.
[He chuckles at the bit about lovers, shaking his head and curling further forward still, so he's sort of tucked neatly against Karamatsu's collarbone.]
[ Back and forth, back and forth. This isn't the first bonding experience he has had with Ichimatsu, but they're definitely rare moments and it always surprises Karamatsu when it happens. One day he trusts him, the next day he hates him. Karamatsu only wishes he could understand and make it right instead of making it confusing. ]
Ah.. now don't say that. You've got a lot going for you— you just haven't been given a good opportunity to try! Trust me, I believe in you, and you'll find somebody here who loves animals.. and hates people... as much as you do. [ what was that mumbled part.. ]
[It's hard to mumble enough to not be heard by someone who's pressed into your collarbone. So Ichimatsu kind of scoffs, rolling his eyes and flopping to lay on his back, still slotted close to his brother.]
I don't hate people, I just prefer cats. They're easier to deal with. [I don't hate you, he almost says, but that would be too much for them both.]
[ Ah, he and Ichimatsu have a hard time talking sometimes, and this is one of those nights where conversations could be better. He's quiet for awhile, knowing for sure it's going to take Ichimatsu forever to actually sleep. ]
Oi. [ he expects a negative response to his suggestion, but here it goes: ]
Shall I sing for you a lullaby, my little brother?
[He closes his eyes in the darkness, sighing at himself for entertaining the idea. He has always liked the sound of his brother's voice-- all of them, but for some reason, especially Karamatsu. Maybe it was because he talked so damn much and Ichimatsu always tuned him out that it made good background noise. He spoke low enough that it was a pleasant sort of baritone that didn't cut into his thoughts like Choromatsu's shrieking or Totty's cutesy giggling.]
[But he'd already wandered way too far outside of his comfort zone, tonight. He rolls his shoulders and then rolls onto his opposite side, turning his back to Karamatsu.]
...I don't want to have another nightmare, one with your singing in it would be way worse.
[ Karamatsu allows him to roll and cold shoulder him, chuffing some laughter. That's more like the Ichimatsu he knows. Anyway, he's a persistent guy, and so, he starts off quietly, despite Ichimatsu's protest: ]
♫ Hushabye, hushabye— My good baby, sleep— Where did my boy's baby-sitter go? Beyond that mountain, back to her home— As a souvenir from her home, what did you get? A toy drum and a shou flute. ♫
[ a lullaby more fitting for a mother singing to her son, and surprisingly, it's not something painful. who knows, maybe their mother sang it to them. ]
[As soon as he starts singing Ichimatsu is irritated and ready to roll back over and shove him off the bed to shut him up-- but... Then it's not something obnoxious. It's actually kind of soothing. He only gets as far as to leer over his shoulder at his brother, and makes a sincerely dejected face as he settles, turning back to look at nothing in the darkness.]
[If Karamatsu listens reeeeal close, he might even hear Ichimatsu humming along softly.]
[ Karamatsu does hear it, and he repeats the verse one more time before he eventually turns into soft humming in unison instead and then... .... Karamatsu falls asleep. Did he just... actually sing himself to sleep and not Ichimatsu? It seems to be that way. ]
[That's fine, this is fine. The shift to humming and then silence is actually nice, and he knows enough about how to tell Karamatsu's passed the fuck out given he's spent most of his life sleeping with him behind him. He waits a handful of seconds after Karamatsu goes quiet before rolling onto his back again, worming his way back under the covers properly. Nyanko trills and joins them up on the bed, and when he settles neatly against Ichimatsu's hip purring, he turns his head and focuses on the sounds of his brother breathing and his cat purring and falls asleep in short order.]
